LOL! I love that line you wrote: "It’s a fully mobile, highly connected dog-and pony show..." You've quite eloquently distilled how many people feel about this particular Apple device.
But seriously, it's not so funny you are experiencing a limited set of capabilities with the iTunes Store simply because you live in Belgium.
I would send a detailed letter outlining your iTunes plight directly to Apple and/or Steve Jobs. If that doesn't work, mail your plea along with a bottle of Chimay or any other Trappist —that might do the trick.

While we are talking about the issue of Dear Jeremy Clarkson,, Allowing your car to idle for long periods of time, like while you're waiting for someone or warming up your vehicle during the cold winter months, not only wastes fuel, but also reduces the overall lifespan of your vehicle.

I have to admit that your own weblog is highly insightful. I've been spending a large amount of free time over the last couple weeks seeking at just what is in existence in accordance with simple fact that I am getting ready to launch a blog. The important information you have put on here is more or less to the point. It just sounds so mystifying with reference to all the solutions that are you can get, but I love the way your appears to be. Gotta fall in love with where modern technology has come through the past 10 yrs.

Hilarious but also disbelief.
But then again, bonobos or nitwits, this is a new era. Perhaps the young girls are indeed attracted by the size of your phone, real women have other preferences.
So, go ahead and go for equality. You have my blessing.

Interesting, but all depends on how you define... for me social is (possible) interaction. Do I have interaction with ALL of my 17000 followers?
No. But I pay them the courtesy of @ least following them back and listening to their conversation.
How do you want to trigger any aspect of "social" media when your listening mode is de-activated? How are you going to be able to assess the medium correctly if you're not using it to it's fullest possibilities?
For the moment, Yves Leterme follows 9 (nine) people. That's not enough to take Twitter as a medium seriously.
trust me, I'm consultant ;-)

Hi Danny,

Good move to flag this up with mr Leterme.

But I don't totally agree with you.

It would be great if Yves did get involved all the way, but as my fellow RAAKonteur Wessel van Rensburg wrote in his blogpost 'Conversations don't scale':

"Social media is full of misconceptions, confusion and unexamined clichés. That social media is about conversations is one of these. "

(Full post at http://www.wewillraakyou.com/2010/02/conversations-dont-scale/)

Of course, 'conversation' is one potential use of Social Media, but it's not the only one.

Following people is totally no guarantee for a conversation. For example: do you really have meaningful 'conversations' with all of your 17000
followers?

I agree, Twitter is a great listening tool, but Yves doesn't need to follow people to do that. People could tweet him directly.
And you're right in this: he would miss an amazing opportunity if he then didn't get involved in those conversations.
Has to be said: he seems to be doing ok so far. Quite a few replies already.

But I think we've come to a point that you could very well argue that Twitter does have a function as a broadcast medium.

Quite a lot of the people I follow are on my radar because they give me interesting information. I don't need to have a conversation with them for it to be useful.

So yeah, here to help.

Right on Danny! I'm as convinced as you are that using Twitter differently, would completely transform Mr. Leterme's experience.

The word "follow" "followers" is probably the most misleading word spread around defining Twitter as a communication tool. And maybe this is the reason why it is, unfortunately, still, too often used in a one way, broadcast mode.

I'd rather say : "People who care about what YOU might want to say or share" "How much do YOU care, the other way around?". IMHO, this is exactly where the word "CARE" pops out, making Twitter a unique, rich and rewarding "human" experience.

This said, when it comes to learning, being open and jumping in is already a fantastic start.

All the best & here to help if I can too.

Hello Fellow Belgian Danny
If you want to be picky on who is following you(except the IRS)stay on Linkedin , it is reasonably professional enough to avoid spams if you don't answer to invitations to join networks from perfect strangers. If you are a group/blog owner, you can always exclude the offender. On Twitter you can do the same if you get too much noise/spam from someone: you just block the person. It is like putting a No PUB sticker on your door. Is it working ? if yes please let me know where I can find one.
Thanks

Very much in phase with the unforced, genuine "will" to engage conversation versus a "must do", super-Ace card asset to play on an online presence. If some nitwits don't, I trust people will... see, sniff, feel the difference.

Conversation is above all a very human thing, an authentic connector to emotions and words that make us more people than strategy, like "care", or "empathy"... It goes further than a systematic response back to a Tweet (although it is OK to be nice and polite, "if" and only if you mean it). It goes beyond who you are (fancy title vs silly avatar) or what you do (sell for billions vs give Ice Cream away), up to the true nature of your intentions.

PS: Very nice picture! I like the perspective of the rails never touching still showing the way and the transversality of the conversation.

Danny,

Thank you for this mind challenging post. I'm in phase with you on this. Many people are indeed still toying with Twitter without taking the time to understand what's behind. Treating Twitter like the Dolce & Gabbana of the digital communication, some people will adopt it in order to be associated to its aura, like the guarantee of being into the latest digital hype.

This is like using a talkie-walkie as a bling-bling necklace, decorative accessory, without caring about the utility, completely missing the communication canal. Now, about the media, journalists and communication professionals; it is indeed quite entertaining to see how some of them are still following bling-bling-twitter-rappers -no offense, it's just a metaphor and I like the real rappers-, focusing the main topic of their articles on "fashion", instead of conversation. Politicians in Belgium are also very funny wearing a Facebook hoodie and a kewl Twitter cap upside down, saying "Yo!" every once in a while. ; )

I read this on the Copenhaegen website and it makes sense : "When people lead... leaders follow". - Consciousness takes time and I trust time will tell. : )

Great article Danny!

In Spain we may say we have the same phenomenum. Companies are struggling to learn how to use SoMe but for now not much success.

Some Newspapers use it wonderfully, like @la_informacion, others just copy and paste their headlines and tweet them at the same time like @el_pais.

Politicians are trying to use SoMe but they are still skeptic to it, and when they are not skeptic they are clumsy... it´s not easy for them (i want to think that).

hug!

Politicians are trying to use SoMe but they are still skeptic to it, and when they are not skeptic they are clumsy… it´s not easy for them (i want to think that).

It’s difficult to predict the future, Vince. If I had that trustworthy crystal ball, I’ll be disgustingly rich by now… . However, my personal opinion is that the consumer mass nowadays dictates the trends. As Time correctly stated: the web is a mass medium that belongs to the people. Professionals can suggest and hint @ tools, like Facebook or Twitter, and the crowd will choose those that are peer-pressure-hyped most succefully. For professional communicators, marketeers and content providers that are not into tool-building, it will be a question of watching where the crowd is moving, and tool surf accordingly. Media to the crowds will shape shift and morph… but the good old art of transferring messages to audiences stays the same…
And deep in me, I’m still God. I hide it better nowadays ;-)

I think we agree :-) I was talking about the pure emotion, and the cheap snowballing of that. There is no hierachy of pain indeed... but too often the filters are set in a way that what pain is selected to be voiced is so.... well, you know ;-).
SoMe and online media were almost silent on the recent deaths of the earthquake, and volunteers helping out in emerging countries hardly find a canvas, even on SoMe for their causes.
With all due respect for the fans (in fact, I am one :-)). But if people do claime that the death of MJ is the worst day in human history, the blackest day of their life, if they voice on their FB pages that life now has no porpose any more... etc and at nauseam, well in that case referring to suffering and pain that conveniently does NOT make the headlines these day should put things in perspective.
And I agree, referring to the children, and selecting that particular picture is playing with emotions, and tilting the argument way out of context. But it got everybody´s attention.... most be the die-hard journalist in me ;-)

Not entirely convinced that the "it could be worse, there are children starving in Africa" argument is valid. If we judge all human experience by the standards of the worst excesses, then aren't we saying that no-one can claim to experience suffering or pain ("cheer up, there are children starving in Africa") Are we - in fact - establishing some kind of hierarchy of pain and suffering; whereby (for example) an innocent child has greater claims to our sympathy than an innocent adult, who has greater claim than a wealthy person, who has greater claim than a criminal?

My argument is v. poorly thought through. Sorry

If you use still emails as a replacement for letters to keep in contact with friends, than I don't see why e-mails are over and done with. Perhaps I am just a bit old. But just like you still believe in blogs, I believe in emails for the same reasons. You have space and time to express your thoughts.

couldn't agree more. nice post. I do tend to agree with the fact that - as with all phenomenons - we'll have a 'self controlling- cleaning' mechanism. Those who started blogging because it was supposed to be the thing to do, will stop. Those who liked to blg, for the sher joy of voicing an opinion will continue, and overall quality will increase ;-)

Couldn't agree more. As of this minute, I have 510 unread messages in one account, and 1,119 in another. I make no apologies for this; most of them are now so old that they are without any value at all. Others are irrelevant: like many senior people in large companies I'm copied in on emails simply because of political expedience.

If you want to talk to me these days, send me an @ tweet or an IM (I publish all my contact details on my blog)

I'm kinda average about getting back to people on Facebook, too.

Now, up till about a year ago, I tried to run an inbox zero policy. Now I've clearly failed in that.

Partly it's a technology failure (I used to bother with things like rules and filters -- these days I can't be bothered.) Partly it's that there are now so many ways to contact me that are so much more engaging that they get my attention first.

Actually, there are a number of world-class climbers who are blogging about their experiences directly from the earth's summits. For example, an Italian named Lorenzo Gariano is attempting to complete the Seven Summits this month, and is blogging about his trip up Mount Vinson Massif in Antartica. He has also blogged about his summits of Mount Everest and Carstensz Pyramid, using technology similar to Johan's - a handheld computer, a satellite phone, and a digital camera. Lorenzo's blog also includes podcasts, in both English and Italian.

[...] There has been a lot of fuzz about Second Life. The virtual world where you can get rich just by selling virtual land. The virtual world where you could boldly go where even captain Kirk could not. Well, my personal avatar Heliade Beck is living there… and honestly, lately it is bored to death. Ok, we did fly a bit in the beginning. That was fun. And we own a cyber car. How cool is that? And we tried the Sigway. Jippie. And, well…. We generally felt lonely. We went to 2ndLife meetings where no-one showed up. We hanged around in empty discos. We saw hundreds of not moving avatars. Where the heck are all these millions of people? Cyber holiday? A virus? Did the Borgs invade? Or just a too-much-hype digestion? Or is my Avatar consuming too much garlic? [...]

[...] Try to explain to a police officer that the only reason not wearing seatbelts while driving a 1952 MG is because the thing simply does not have any. And does not need any. “But that is dangerous!” Duh. So is crossing the street. A couple of months ago, I was pulled over by one of his colleagues for speeding with a borrowed Lotus. The radar spotted me doing 122 kilometres an hour (!), on a highway limited to 120. I was sternly reminded that: “speeding was bad for me”. And that the Lotus had no airbags. My Audi has a yellow sticker warning me that putting my fingers in the cooling fan might not be the best of ideas. While typing this, I try to enjoy a sex-on-the-beach (the cocktail, that is…), which is difficult, seen that most bottles involved assure me that alcohol is bad. Red meat and foie gras are murderous. Foreign money will give me exotic diseases. Enjoying the one day of sunny weather will surely get me skin cancer.. I love my work and hectic lifestyle so much, it will mess up my cardio-vascular system, and too much air lining in the stratosphere is –according to all these experts- certainly interfering with some crucial bits of my unique and precious DNA. My neighbour is convinced that my Wifi network and my preference for wireless gadgets will grow me another head. There is anti-biotics in farmed salmon, PCB’s in milk, modified molecules in bottled water and hallucinogens in mushrooms. Flying back from Seattle, a 37 year old lady tried to convince me that I should ditch my Breitling: radium hands you know, glow in the dark… Jeremy Clarkson (from Topgear) is right: maybe global warming will kill us in the end. But I am far more concerned about the people who have made it their sworn duty to keep me alive, unconditionally, against all odds, at all cost. [...]

[...] Imagine kids in hospitals. Yep. Scary thought. And often it is impossible for parents, friends and relatives to stay @ their bedside 24/7. And picturing lonely kids in hospital rooms is just sad. Enter the Scottie: a small electronic doll that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth technology and a computer to the net. Kids, friends and family can now communicate and hug, even from a distance. If one kid touches his Scottie, the other kid’s Scottie will light up. If they both hold it, the Scotties will vibrate. Squeezing the Scottie gently will make the other one vibrate as well. The Scottie has a little built-in camera that reads the hues of its environment, which will be reflected in the coloring of the other Scottie. Web 2.0 @ its cutest… Kudos!! [...]

[...] It’s official. I do not want one. Not now. Not in this version. Not in this life. So, you’ll just have to find another present for my birthday, and I just officially erased it from my Christmas wish list. Let’s be honest. Why would someone want it? If you are looking for a nice shiny tool to make you stand out, think again. In the first days alone more than a million other bonobos will have the same exclusive phone, and there are a gazillion more on the waiting list. Further more, it’s way too slow for me, as it is not packed with 3G, and I am dead scared with the fact that it has one horrible irreplaceable battery. And I have a nasty phone bill to prove that a 5 hours talk time in a shiny Apple design will not get high into my charts. My first iPod ended locked to the power charger @ all times, but for a phone that would be unhandy. L [...]
